Getting Your
Learner Licence

Your Complete NSW Learner
Licence Guide

Starting your driving journey in NSW begins with the learner licence. It’s the first stage of the Graduated Licensing Scheme and sets the foundation for safe, supervised driving. This guide explains what the learner licence involves, the eligibility criteria, and the steps you need to take to move towards your provisional licence with confidence.

In NSW, the licensing stages are:
  1. Learner Licence (L plates)
  2. Provisional P1 Licence (Red Ps)
  3. Provisional P2 Licence (Green Ps)
  4. Full Licence

The learner stage focuses on supervised driving experience to build skills and judgement for safe solo driving.

Check Your Eligibility

Before applying for your learner licence in NSW, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Be a resident of NSW
  • Provide valid proof of identity such as a passport or birth certificate
  • Pass the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT)
  • Meet relevant medical or eyesight standards

Once eligible, you can book and sit your DKT to begin your journey as a learner driver.

Passing the DKT

The Driver Knowledge Test is a computer-based exam that checks your understanding of road rules, road signs, and safe driving practices.

  • The test includes 45 multiple-choice questions
  • You must answer at least 41 questions correctly to pass
  • It covers traffic rules and safe driving behaviour

Tips for Passing the DKT

  • Study the official Road Users’ Handbook
  • Practise with online DKT sample tests
  • Observe traffic signs and behaviour while travelling as a passenger
  • Take your time and read each question carefully
  • Aim to understand the rules rather than memorise answers

After Getting Your Learner Driver Licence

After you pass the DKT and receive your L plates, you can drive under strict supervision. You’ll also receive a Learner Driver Log Book or can use the digital app to record your driving hours.

Requirements include:

  • At least 120 hours of supervised driving
  • Minimum 20 hours of night driving
  • All hours logged with a fully licensed supervising driver

This stage is about building experience across different traffic, weather, and road conditions.
