How to become a
driving instructor in NSW

Become the teacher your students will remember. As a driving instructor you can teach your students lifelong skills and a passion for driving that will carry them throughout their lives.

The day a new driver gets their licence will be a significant milestone in their life, statistically it can also be the day they will be most at risk. The potential of road crash casualties significantly increases the moment a young person successfully obtains their Provisional licence.

Your driving expertise can equip students with the skills and experience to enjoy a lifetime of driving with confidence.

One of the most difficult parts of running your own business is somehow being an accountant, marketing executive and administration specialist while still making it home in time for dinner. You can feel restrained by being in charge of your business rather than freed.

With a dedicated marketing team, sales team, and administrative team – you have people on your side who are always working to help you succeed as a franchise. The generation of new leads, customer support and product development are constantly happening behind the scenes at LTrent, all while our instructors create Australia’s safest drivers.

To make things even easier for our instructors, we’ve personally created the most intuitive, modern diary management system in the industry. This technology is custom to LTrent, and specifically designed and developed to meet the needs of our instructors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are our answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about how to become a driving instructor

You’ll need to fill out the ‘Application for Licence under Driving Instructors Act 1992’ and bring it to your local Service NSW (with the medical check section filled out by your GP).

You’ll also need to bring proof of identity, your full drivers licence (that you’ve held for three out of the last four years), a Working With Children Check number, and four passport size photographs.

If any of this is tricky for you, just give us a call on 8748 4500 and we’ll answer any questions you have.

You must be at least 21 years old, hold a full NSW licence (for 3 out of the last four years), and have a valid Working With Children Check number.

When you’re doing the extremely important work of teaching young people to drive, you want to be sure you’re well prepared and ready to have the lives of others in your hands. The Certificate IV program is done partly independently through online modules with in-car assessments. How long it takes is really dependent on how often, and how much time you’re willing to dedicate to the training. The average time to complete the course is 2-6 months.

Entirely up to you! You give us your available shifts, and we’ll only schedule lessons during those times. That’s the beauty of being a franchise.

LTrent’s remuneration system is the best in our industry. A small infrastructure fee will go towards funding all of the support you receive. More information will be provided in your one-on-one interview.

Being business savvy is important to consistent success in our industry, through following our sales techniques as well as teaching curriculum our instructors are able to earn as much as six figure salaries and revel in the success of an independent franchise. Hard work and dedication directly translate to earnings, and we’re proud of that.

At LTrent, our fleet is the most modern in the industry – it’s a requirement that all of our instructor’s cars are less than four years old and fitted with dual brakes (trust us, you’ll want them).

We’d still love to hear from you! We have some additional training so that you’ll be knowledgeable in the Trent Method so that we can make sure you take your career to new heights.

What our instructors
say about us

LTRENT

"I have been a Driver Trainer for LTrent since 2016 and I feel like I am performing a community service but I am getting paid for it! I enjoy the challenge of teaching students to become safer drivers, particularly those in the 17-25 age group where you can have a real influence on their driving habits and skill level. It’s also nice to know you are working with a market leader in LTrent who have developed an excellent curriculum, that is easy to follow. The training phase to become an instructor is robust and thorough and I felt well prepared when I hit the road with my first student on board."

Chris, LTrent Driving Instructor

"The TRENT office provides excellent ongoing support that enables me to have more time to do what I came here to do - help people learn to drive and be safe on the roads. This strong support not only ensures that the administration side of my business is running smoothly but also that my training methods are up to date within their structured curriculum. The steady flow of new student opportunities thanks to Trent’s excellent reputation as the industry leader in driver training is really impressive."
