Ormeau Hills is a residential suburb located in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. According to the 2016 census, Ormeau Hills had a population of 3,148 people. The suburb experienced significant growth between 2011 and 2016, with its population increasing by an impressive 604% during that period.
Geographically, Ormeau Hills is divided into distinct areas based on land use and elevation. The eastern part of the suburb is a suburban development on lower, flatter land, ranging from 10 to 30 metres above sea level. The centre of the locality is more hilly, reaching up to 130 metres, and is characterised by rural residential land use. The western part of Ormeau Hills is mountainous, rising to 250 metres, and remains undeveloped.
The name “Ormeau Hills” is derived from the neighbouring suburb of Ormeau, which itself is named after Ormeau House, the estate of Major Alexander Jenyns Boyd, a sugar planter in the 1860s. Boyd’s first wife, Isabella, was born on Ormeau Road in Belfast, Ireland. The word “ormeau” is French, meaning “young elm”.
