Learn About The
Driver Knowledge Test in NSW

Your driving journey in NSW begins with the Driver Knowledge Test, the first step toward getting your learner licence. It’s where you learn the road rules, safe driving practices, and the responsibilities of being behind the wheel. Passing the DKT sets you up for supervised driving and the next stages of your licence.

About the Driver Knowledge Test

The DKT is essential for all learner drivers, whether you are starting from scratch, moving from an overseas licence, or preparing to ride a motorcycle. By passing the test, you show that you can recognise road signs, understand road rules, and apply safe driving principles.

In New South Wales, the DKT is run by Transport for NSW and the former Roads and Maritime Services. Learners must hold a valid identity document to book and sit the test. Passing the DKT allows you to get your learner’s licence and begin supervised driving.

Driver Knowledge Test Fee in NSW

When booking the Driver Knowledge Test, you must pay the test fee, which is $57 in New South Wales as of August 2025. If you pass the DKT, you will also pay the learner licence fee to receive your licence card. If you do not pass, you will need to pay again for each new attempt for the in-person test. Meanwhile, for the online test, you can retake the DKT in NSW as many times as needed after an initial 12-hour lockout period if you fail, without paying an additional fee for further attempts. Fees are paid at the time of booking either online through the Service NSW website or in person at a service centre.

Driver Knowledge Test Online

The DKT online is a flexible option that lets learners take the test from home or another quiet location. You will log into the official website, verify your identity, and begin the test on screen. The questions appear exactly like the in-person version, drawn from the same question bank.

  • Available in several languages, including English, Spanish, and Turkish
  • Stable internet connection recommended to avoid disruptions
  • Prepare with practice questions and the Road User Handbook

Driver Knowledge Test In-Person

You can also sit the DKT in person at a Service NSW centre. This is the traditional way most learners take the test. When you arrive, you must bring valid identity documents, pay the test fee, and sit at a computer terminal.

  • Same format as online: multiple-choice covering rules, signs, and safe driving
  • Questions come from the official database — study the Road User Handbook
  • Staff can assist with login issues, document checks, and process questions

Extra Support to Take the Test

If you need extra support, there are options to make the DKT easier to complete.

  • Audio option that reads questions aloud (helpful for reading difficulties)
  • Free online practice quizzes to prepare at your own pace
  • Extra preparation recommended for overseas licence holders to learn local rules
  • Test available in multiple languages, including Spanish and Turkish

How to Take Your Driver Knowledge Test (DKT)

Online DKT

The online version is an interactive 4 to 6-hour course designed to teach road safety and the road rules in NSW. It includes the official test you must pass to get your car (C class) learner’s licence. You can enrol through your MyServiceNSW Account, provided you meet the eligibility criteria and can supply the required documents. Once enrolled, you get 12 months’ access to the course.

  • 4 to 6-hour interactive course with unlimited test attempts
  • Enrol via your MyServiceNSW Account
  • Only pay the test fee once, when applying for your licence
  • Available in English and Simplified Chinese, with accessibility features

You can enrol in DKT online at 15 years and 11 months. However, you can only apply for a learner’s licence once you are 16 years or older.

Service NSW encourages people to take the online assessment. You will require a valid reason, such as lacking internet access, requiring an interpreter, or needing a language other than English or Simplified Chinese, to take an in-person DKT. These conditions are subject to change; please refer to Service NSW’s website for updated information.

In-Person DKT

If you prefer to sit the test in person, you can visit a Service NSW Centre, a mobile service centre, or a participating council agency. You’ll need to book the test, bring the right identity documents and pay the test fee before sitting the test. The test is completed on a computer under supervision, which means staff are available to help if you have questions or encounter any issues.

  • Taken at a Service NSW or partner location
  • Pay the fee for each attempt
  • 45 multiple-choice questions, 41 correct to pass
  • Supervised environment with staff support

The DKT in-person is available in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Croatian, English, Greek, Korean, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese.
