Learn About The
Hazard Perception Test in NSW

The Hazard Perception Test helps you move from your learner licence to your provisional licence. It assesses how well you can spot and respond to potential dangers on the road using real-life driving scenarios. Passing the HPT shows you’re developing the awareness needed for safer, independent driving.

About the Hazard Perception Test

The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is a computer-based assessment that evaluates your ability to recognise and respond to potentially dangerous situations while driving. Unlike the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT), which focuses on rules, the HPT measures your awareness and decision-making in real traffic scenarios.

The test includes short driving videos filmed from the driver’s point of view. You’ll need to respond when you think it’s safe to act — such as slowing down, overtaking, or turning. It focuses on how quickly and safely you can identify hazards and make sound decisions.

When to Take the HPT

In New South Wales, you can take the HPT once you’ve held your learner licence for at least 10 months. Passing it is required before you can book your practical driving test for your P1 licence.

To move to your P1 licence, you must:

  • Hold your learner licence for at least 12 months
  • Complete 120 supervised driving hours, including 20 at night
  • Pass the Hazard Perception Test

Other Australian states such as Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia also have similar hazard perception testing requirements, though rules vary by location.

Why the HPT Is Important

New drivers are more likely to be involved in crashes because they have less experience and slower reactions to hazards. The HPT helps reduce this risk by ensuring you can spot potential dangers early and take safe action before they become accidents.

By passing the HPT, you demonstrate that you can notice hazards, respond appropriately, and make safe decisions in real-world driving conditions — vital skills for progressing towards independent driving.

How the HPT Works

The HPT consists of around 15 to 20 video-based questions. Each clip simulates a real traffic situation from the driver’s perspective. You’ll be asked to click or tap the screen when you think it’s safe to act — such as slowing down, overtaking, or turning.

Clicking too early or too late is marked as incorrect, and your timing determines your score. The test is designed to replicate real driving experiences, helping you learn to make confident, timely decisions behind the wheel.

How to Book for the HPT

You can book your Hazard Perception Test through the Service NSW website or in person at a Service NSW centre. To book, you’ll need your learner licence details and a valid payment method. The test fee is approximately $57 per attempt as of July 2025.

  • Book online or at a Service NSW Centre
  • Pay the test fee during booking
  • Reschedule online if needed

Test appointments can fill quickly, especially during school holidays, so it’s best to book early.

How to Prepare for the HPT

Many learners fail on their first attempt because they react too early, too late, or hesitate. Preparation is key to passing the test on your first try. You can prepare by:

  • Completing online HPT practice tests that mirror real test scenarios
  • Observing traffic as a passenger and thinking about safe responses
  • Gaining real driving experience in varied conditions like night or rain

During the test, focus fully on the screen, stay calm, and respond naturally — as you would when driving in real traffic.

What to Expect on Test Day

On test day, arrive at your booked Service NSW location with your learner licence and ID. Pay your test fee before starting. The test is taken on a touchscreen or computer, and each video scenario plays automatically.

Click or tap when you believe it’s safe to act. Once finished, you’ll immediately find out if you passed or need another attempt. If you fail, you can rebook and try again. Passing on your first attempt helps you progress smoothly towards your P1 licence.

Common Questions About the HPT

Is the HPT harder than the DKT?

The Driver Knowledge Test checks your understanding of road rules, while the Hazard Perception Test checks how well you apply them in real situations. Many learners find it easier after practice.

Do I need driving experience to pass?

Yes. The HPT ensures you’re ready for solo driving, so experience behind the wheel is essential for success.

What if I fail the test?

You can rebook and pay the fee again. Failing doesn’t affect your learner licence, but it delays your move to a P1 licence.

How many times can I sit the HPT?

There’s no limit. You can retake the test as many times as needed until you pass.

Can I practise for free?

Yes. Free online HPT practice tests and sample videos are available to help you understand the format and timing required.

Is the HPT used outside NSW?

Yes. States like Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia also use hazard perception testing for provisional drivers.
