A learner’s licence in Queensland is the starting point for anyone who wants to drive a car in Queensland. It authorises a learner driver to begin supervised driving while learning the road rules and gaining practical experience. This stage sets you up for the practical driving test and the later move to a provisional licence.

The process involves preparing for the written road rules test, gathering the right documents, and applying through Transport and Main Roads. Each learner driver must understand what is required before visiting a participating QGAP office, transport customer service centre, or selected police stations.

Requirements for a QLD Learner Licence

Meeting the learner’s licence QLD requirements helps you avoid delays during your licence application. You need to satisfy age limits, pass the written road rules test, and provide documents that confirm your identity and eligibility.

Learner drivers are asked to ensure their traffic history is clear. A suspended licence or other issues linked to your driving record may affect your application.

Key points:

  • Minimum age of 16 to attempt the written road rules test.
  • Bring identity documents and your completed driver’s licence application form.
  • Evidence that you passed the PrepL or that you are ready for the written road rules test.
  • You must not be suspended or disqualified.

Having your documents in order speeds up your visit. Your details are recorded by TMR staff, and you receive information about the next steps once your application is accepted.

Process to Apply for a Learner Licence in Queensland

The process starts with preparing for the written road rules test. You can choose PrepL if you prefer online learning, or sit the test in person. Study the road rules and practise using real examples, especially situations involving C-class vehicles.

Once ready, visit TMR or a participating QGAP office. Staff will check your identity, confirm you are eligible, and help you complete your driver’s licence application form. You will need to pay the fee before the learner’s licence is issued.

Steps:

  • Study the road rules.
  • Complete PrepL or pass the written road rules test.
  • Visit TMR with your documents.
  • Pay the required fee.
  • Have your photo taken and receive confirmation of your learner’s licence.

When everything is recorded and approved, you receive a driver’s licence receipt that allows you to start supervised driving. The hardcopy licence arrives later by mail.

Location and Cost

You can apply at Transport and Main Roads customer service centres, participating QGAP offices, and some police stations in regional areas. Each service location provides access to testing, identity checks, and payment facilities.

  • Learner licence fee: $77.55 (as of 1 July 2025)
  • PrepL test: $28.70
  • Written road rules test: $28.70
  • Hazard perception test: $41.30
  • Practical driving test: $67.15

Please note that fees are set by the department and updated each year. Payment can usually be made by card at the counter.

Important points:

  • Costs vary depending on the product you select.
  • Selected police stations only offer limited services.
  • Check opening hours before visiting.
  • Bring all documents, as incomplete applications take longer.

Many learners prefer visiting a main road centre, as these sites offer full support and clear guidance from staff.

Receiving Your Licence

After you pay and complete all steps, you receive a driver’s licence receipt at the counter. This document confirms that you hold a learner’s licence and can drive under supervision. The final card is sent by mail to the address recorded on your application.

Learner drivers must carry the receipt or their licence card whenever they drive. While learning, supervised driving is mandatory, and your supervisor must hold an open licence for the class of vehicle you are using.

Points to remember:

  • Keep your driver’s licence receipt safe until your card arrives.
  • Your address on record must be correct for delivery.
  • You can only drive with an eligible supervisor.
  • A learner’s licence authorises supervised driving only.

Next Stage After the Learner Licence

Once you hold your learner’s licence, the next stage involves building real driving experience. You must learn safe habits, practise in different conditions, and record your progress. Queensland requires a set number of supervised hours in your hardcopy logbook or the digital app, including night driving.

When you feel ready and meet the recorded hour requirements, you can book your practical driving test. Passing this test moves you to the provisional licence stage and grants more independence on the road.

Progress involves:

  • Log every supervised drive.
  • Gain experience in varied weather and traffic.
  • Follow the rules at all times to avoid issues with your record.
  • Prepare for the practical driving test.
