What Is PrepL in Queensland?

PrepL stands for Prepare for Your Learner Licence. It is an interactive online learning and assessment program introduced by Transport and Main Roads in Queensland.

PrepL replaces the 30-question paper-based written road rules test for a class C learner licence. Until PrepL becomes mandatory, eligible applicants may choose to complete PrepL or sit the written road rules test at a Transport and Main Roads customer service centre.

Instead of attending a service centre to complete a written knowledge test, learners now complete an online learning course that teaches road rules, hazard perception, safe driving behaviours, and the Fatal Five road behaviours.

The purpose of PrepL is to improve hazard awareness and road safety before learners begin supervised driving. You must complete either PrepL or the written road rules test before applying for your learner licence.

Who Needs to Complete PrepL in QLD?

Most first time learner licence applicants in Queensland must complete PrepL.

Age Requirements

You can enrol in PrepL from 15 years and 11 months old. You must be at least 16 years old to obtain your learner licence.

You May Need to Complete PrepL if You:

Are applying for your first learner licence, have never held a driver licence, or hold an overseas licence that is not recognised for exemption.

In some circumstances, a written test may still apply. It is important to check your eligibility directly with Transport and Main Roads.

How Does PrepL Work?

PrepL is completed entirely online and combines learning with assessment in one structured course.

Course Format

PrepL includes interactive modules, scenario-based videos, hazard perception training, decision-based questions, and a final 30-question multiple-choice assessment.

To pass PrepL, you must achieve 90 per cent or higher.

The course is structured into three sections: your driving attitude, signs and rules, and sharing the road with others.

Completion Time

The course takes approximately 4 to 6 hours and can be completed at your own pace within 12 months.

If You Do Not Pass

If you do not reach 90 per cent, you can try again after 24 hours without paying again.

If another person completes the course for you, penalties may apply, and you may be blocked from re-enrolling for 6 months.

How to Prepare for PrepL

Preparation improves your confidence and helps you answer questions accurately.

Read the Queensland Road Rules Handbook, review traffic signs, understand learner conditions, and focus on hazard perception and safe decision making.

Practice tests can help you become familiar with the format and improve your understanding.

Stay calm, take your time, and work through the course steadily.
