About Burleigh Waters, QLD
Burleigh Waters is a picturesque suburb located in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. According to the 2016 census, it had a population of 14,310 residents. The suburb is well-known for its canal and waterway system, which provides access from Burleigh Waters to The Broadwater and the Pacific Ocean, enhancing the area’s appeal for waterfront living. The suburb features five man-made lakes, contributing to its scenic beauty and offering residents and visitors alike a tranquil environment.
The history of Burleigh Waters is closely tied to the development of canal estates on the Gold Coast, with the first such estates being established in the 1950s. The suburb has evolved significantly since then, with development accelerating in the 1970s. One notable development was the Burleigh Waters Estate, a canal extension project by Hooker Corporation with BMD Group during the late 1970s.
The official naming and bounding of Burleigh Waters as a suburb occurred on 1 June 1981, with its name derived from the nearby Burleigh Head, originally named Burly Head by surveyor James Warner in 1840. The suburb has grown to include a mix of residential properties, shopping centres like Marymount College, and educational institutions such as Caningeraba State School, which opened in 1987 to accommodate the growing population.
