About Coombabah, QLD
Coombabah, a suburb in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, had a population of 10,388 people according to the 2016 census. The suburb is encircled by Paradise Point and Hope Island to the north, Arundel to the south, Runaway Bay and Biggera Waters to the east, and Helensvale to the west, with Coombabah State High School being a notable landmark. Oxley Drive serves as the main arterial road through Coombabah.
The name “Coombabah” comes from the local Bundjalung language, Ngaraangbal dialect, meaning “place of the wood grubs,” referring to the teredo worm, which was a food source cultivated by the Indigenous people. The area’s history includes the establishment of Coombabah Provisional School in the late 19th century to serve the children of workers in the area, reflecting its early community-focused development.
