About Pimpama, QLD
Pimpama is a northern suburb in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. As of the 2021 census, it had a population of 24,601. The suburb’s name is of Aboriginal origin, reportedly derived from the Bundjalung language (Yugumbir dialect), meaning “place of soldier (mickey) birds.”
Historically, Pimpama was a small farming community that began to grow in the 1860s. It was notable for being a stop for Cobb and Co coach services and the location of Queensland’s first sawmill. The region was also known for growing arrowroot from the 1880s, with its crop supplying the entire country by 1908. In recent times, Pimpama has experienced significant housing development due to the availability of land and its proximity to the motorway.
Geographically, Pimpama is situated 29.5 kilometres (18.3 mi) north of Surfers Paradise on the Pacific Motorway. It is the last remaining rural town on the Pacific Motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The Pimpama River, which flows from the Darlington Range at Kingsholme down to Moreton Bay, marks the northern boundary of the suburb.
