About Ormeau, QLD
Ormeau is a hinterland town and suburb in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. As of the 2016 census, Ormeau had a population of 14,460 people. It is situated in the northern part of the Gold Coast, approximately 41 kilometres north of Surfers Paradise and 49 kilometres south of Brisbane.
The suburb’s name, Ormeau, is derived from Ormeau House, the estate of Major Alexander Jenyns Boyd, a sugar planter from the 1860s. His first wife, Isabella (nĂ©e Dawson), was born at Ormeau Road, Belfast, Ulster, Ireland. The word “ormeau” is French for “young elm.”
Ormeau has a rich educational history with several schools established over the years. Podinga Provisional School, later renamed Ormeau Provisional School, opened in 1878 and became Ormeau State School in 1909. Ormeau Upper State School operated from 1919 to around 1933. More recent educational institutions include Toogoolawa School (opened in 2001), Livingstone Christian College (2002), Lutheran Ormeau Rivers District School (2006), Norfolk Village State School (2009), Ormeau Woods State High School (2009), and Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School (2011).
