How To Get Your Learners Permit In ACT

How To Get Your Learners Permit In ACT | LTrent Driving SchoolGetting your learner driver licence in the ACT is the first step as you learn to drive. After earning your learner permit, you can work toward getting a provisional licence, and eventually earning your full driver licence.

But what do you need to do before you learn to drive in ACT? Here’s what you need to know about getting your learners permit.

1. You Must Be At Least 15 Years & 9 Months Of Age

First of all, learner drivers must be at least 15 years and 9 months of age before they can begin the process of applying for their L plates. If you are younger than this, you must wait until you meet this requirement. There is no way to get around this age-related restriction and get your learners or provisional licence early from Access Canberra.

2. You Must Complete The Mandatory Pre-Learner Licence Course

The first step in learner and provisional licencing is completing the pre-learner licence course (PLLC). The PLLC is a training session offered by a driver instructor, and it may take place in an in-person classroom environment, or online over ZOOM and other similar web tools, depending on your area and the instructor and driving school you choose.

This course contains the basics of ACT road rules, as well as problem-solving and decision-making sessions, statistical analysis of traffic data, group problems and tasks, research assignments, and many other topics and exercises. Together, the information delivered in this course will help you learn the basics about driving safely and ACT road rules, providing you with the baseline of knowledge you need to begin driving with your Ls.

3. You Must Complete The Road Rules Knowledge Test

This competency-based assessment tests whether you are road-ready, and understand the basics of traffic flow, road rules, driving safely, and other information. You must successfully complete the Road Rules Knowledge Test to get your Ls.

Currently, there are 378 training questions in the Road Rules Knowledge Test, related to subjects like Alcohol and Drugs, Intersections, Seat Belts, Vulnerable Road Users, and other such topics. 35 questions will be drawn in the categories of Car General and Driving General – two may be answered incorrectly in each category, for a total of four incorrect answers. More than four incorrect answers will result in failure, and you must retake the test at a future date.

In most cases, this test will be delivered by the same driving school where you chose to complete your PLLC. You will be charged a fee for taking the test, but there are no limits on how many times you can take it to pass and get your learners permit in ACT.

To prepare for this test, it’s highly recommended that you visit this page to read the latest iteration of the ACT Road Rules Handbook. This contains all of the information you will need to know to pass your Road Rules Knowledge Test and earn your learners permit in ACT.
